Men’s style has come a long way since the 1990s, and possibly nowhere more so than in terms of the accessories we are prepared to carry. Remember the episode of Friends in which Rachel encourages Joey to use ‘a man’s bag’ - a leather tote, in fact – to land an acting role, much to the amusement of the others, before she ultimately admits there are other men’s bags that may be less… controversial? (Chandler: Yeah, they’re called wallets.) Jump to 2013 and we have celebrity fellas sporting bags left, right and centre – David Beckham, Ronaldo and Kanye West, to name a few. No longer does the man on the street shy away from clutching, slinging or toting a carryall – hell, there are even blogs devoted to men carrying bags (see mursegame.com for plenty of street style shots).
Still, you can’t beat a bit of old fashioned style, and the classic manbag is surely the briefcase. Let us rejoice, then, at this gorgeous new offering from Mulberry – the Single Briefcase. Beautiful, simple and elegant, it has room inside for all your manly stuff – legal documents for that court case you’re about to win, contracts for that deal you’re about to close – but can also fit that copy of Heat you secretly read on your lunch hour and maybe even a brownie for that point of the afternoon when it all just gets a bit too much. Available in black or grey classic printed calf leather, navy hand rolled leather and chocolate soft saddle leather, it features a simple handle on the top and a secure push-lock closure at the front.
Is there a better way to join the manbag movement whilst retaining a sense of classic style and masculinity? I can’t think of one.
